The crazy part is the polydnavirus the wasp injects with the egg. The virus does not harm the wasp. It does not kill the caterpillar, which must survive long enough to gestate the eggs. The virus propagates by living on in the wasp's offspring. This is parasitic teamwork at its finest.

can anyone tell me what the tiny white protuberances on the caterpillars are? not the cocoons, but the tiny dots much smaller and all over the caterpillar. are they somehow part of this process? or are they some anatomical feature of the caterpillar?

Just look. Jewel wasp on one side and periplaneta americana on the other. Jewel takes control of Americana's brain and drags her to a bad fate. My Lord, who is wise in everything, I prostrate before your majesty, do not lead me from the right path.

Amazing. There’s no way blind evolution can come up with such an incredible attack strategy. First question: how does the wasp know about tha anatomy of the roache’s nervous system in order to access it precisely with its venom? Second, how does the wasp select and synthesize the three-ingredient concoction which does the job of altering the roach’s behaviour in such a precise and desirable way for it’s predatory purposes? To me this is proof of DESIGN, hence a Creator. Blind, uncomprehending, hit-and-miss evolution is incapable of achieving this.

I was googling Dr Preuss when an older sister and I were discussing her OLD Savoy Camera. Ken worked with my father in the mid 60s (?) in North Platte NE (a UNL "Experiment station").. I believe my earliest memory is of Ken (who was also a fisherman bringing over his fish (catfish) as big as I was (in his Volkswagen van?) to dress on our rather large picnic table...I seem to recall a statement made (not sure it was by my father or by Ken, that his picnic table was too small (presumably 4 ft and our picnic table was 8 ft for out family of 10) to comfortably dress the fish). I was probably 4-6 years old at the time.. I think Dad was (with a smile) chuckling and bragging about the size of the fish. Of course, as an Entomologist, it is appropriate he was a fisherman with some inside information. I am now 62, so you might guess that fish (and Dr Preuss) made a big impression on me. I seem to recall he was also an avid photographer and had his own developing room (black and white)..Of course, I may be wrong... But it is a fond (and distant) memory regardless... My folks are long gone, as well as many of Dads friend fishermen...most of whom worked with Dad in North Platte. Fond memories and a friendly face. Thanks for the video and the memories. /PAUSE at about 2 mins/ Alas, I had hit the pause button and typed my comment..and when I resumed, his comment about fly fishing came up...
